The success of The Art of the Portrait®, the first annual - sold out - conference of the Portrait
Society, was beyond our most optimistic expectations. It was one of the largest portrait painting gatherings
ever, and the first time so many nationally known portrait artists, with such distinguished credentials, were
on the same program together. Over 530 participants from all over the United States (representatives from
47 states) and dozens from countries outside the United States attended the first annual Portrait Scoiety
Conference. The sold-out conference was held in the Washington, D.C. area at the Hyatt Regency Reston, April
30 - May 2, 1999. We had many memorable moments together.
The entire weekend was truly inspirational. The demonstrations by Everett Raymond Kinstler, William Draper,
Burton Silverman and others were intriguing. Dr. Alan Fern, Director of the National Portrait Gallery,
was the keynote speaker, and William Draper was presented with the Portrait Society's highest honor,
the Gold Medal. Draper is widely know as the Dean of American Portraiture as he has proven his commitment
to art throughout his illustrious international career. The Portrait Society's first International Competition
brought forth some of the finest works by artists seen in this country. The level of work submitted truly
sets the bar for this competition at the highest level. The memorable weekend ended with a visual feast provided
by the John Singer Sargent exhibit at the National Gallery of Art.
