The Portrait Society's 2008 Portrait Academies

3 Douglas Flynt
Sarasota, Florida
November 14-15, 2008

"[Douglas] has an amazing understanding of light & color, and a very approachable method of teaching." - Florida Portrait Academy attendee

The sixth annual Portrait Academy Series concluded at the Southern Atelier in Sarasota, Florida on November 14 and 15, 2008. The Italianate artwork and classical architecture enhanced attendee's aspiration and eagerness to learn from instruction by featured artist, Douglas Flynt. Kerry Vosler, State Ambassador of Florida, gave a wonderful introduction of Douglas prior to the demonstration. Douglas painted from guest model, Bruce Meade, a colorful and well-known accomplished athlete and three-time Hall of Fame inductee. Students from four local high schools and colleges received scholarships to attend the Friday demonstration.
In the relaxed setting of the Southern Atelier, Saturday workshop attendees set up their supplies and materials. Douglas gave attendees the option to apply the techniques they had learned during the demonstration or to proceed as they normally would. Either way, Douglas gave each student individual attention. Students were appreciative of the time Douglas spent explaining the basics of the initial drawing, mixing of paints, etc. Kerry Vosler reported that Douglas "…really packed a two day event into one."
