The Portrait Society's 2008 Portrait Academies
2 Morgan Weistling
Glendale, California
November 7-8, 2008
"...it's not too extreme to say
I have changed much of how I approach
painting." - California attendee on the Portrait Academy
On
November 7th, nearly 100 students, artists, and Portrait Society members met at the Brand
Art Center in Glendale, California for a sold out 2nd Portrait Academy in the 2008 Fall
Series. Johanna Spinks and Nancy van Buskirk, California's co-State Ambassadors, kicked
off the evening by welcoming the attendees and introducing the featured artist, Morgan
Weistling.
Morgan's focus throughout the weekend centered on the four fundamentals of painting: shapes,
values, edges, and color. Morgan applied these basic principles to his canvas throughout
the demonstration and as the evening progressed, the portrait began to take form. Morgan
encouraged and answered questions from the group, and while informative, his light-hearted
responses resulted in laughter from the group.
Workshop attendees returned to the Brand Art Center the following morning with paintbrushes
in hand. Morgan gave individual attention to each student as he walked around the room,
demonstrating different techniques in oils directly on each student's canvas. Johanna
Spinks, and PAFA instructor, Cheryl Kline, conducted portfolio critiques towards the end
of the day.
Overall, attendees gained valuable knowledge through observation and Morgan's instruction.
Dorothy Lee, art teacher of Marshall High School in Los Angeles, commented on her student's
enjoyment and appreciation of the event, stating, "They all agreed it was a great
experience."
